I am playing minecraft on my iPad and I took my hoe, tapped on grass. Now ya should dig on block and sometimes inside the hole is seeds, then I planted the inside the river or lake and they start growing.

This happened to me as well I just cut down some of the small weed type plants and they appeared there.
